SHORT SYNOPSIS

What would you do if you could hit the re-set button on a stale marriage? Paula and Sam have finally decided to pack it in as a couple. As they divvy up the their household goods they wonder what would have happened if they’d never met. Would their dreams and young ambitions have come true? The discovery of a long-forgotten wedding gift sets off a chain of events that transports them back to their college days in 1983, and the opportunity to rewrite their history together.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Please bring photo & resume
  • Please be prepared to read from the script. Sides will be provided in advance to those who are invited to audition.
  • Please bring 2 musical selections - Pop-music-theatre songs and/or a Pop Song

An accompanist will be present.

CHARACTERS TO BE CAST

1. Sam

Vocal Range - Baritone
Age 54 years old

Sam dreamed of becoming a defense lawyer to help marginalized people but got sidelined by marriage and responsibility. We learn that his confidence was undermined by non-supportive parents. Now he works as a root beer salesman for his uncle. He’s a little old-fashioned and a little bit conservative – kind of an “Every Man” - more content to watch the world go by than to move and shake it.

Strong singer and strong comedic skills – lots of heart.

2. Young Paula

Vocal Range - Soprano or Mezzo Soprano (with a belt)
Age 19 years old (actors submitting MUST look this young)

In 1983, Young Paula is just starting her university career – full of dreams to become a magnificent novelist. Instantly attracted to Young Sam, she second guesses herself and her appeal and tries to talk herself out of this attraction. She is a take charge gal though and ultimately screws up the courage to invite YS to the homecoming dance. We learn that she is a bit of a rocker at heart and is much bolder than she seems.

Strong singer and strong comedic skills – lots of heart.

3. Young Sam

Vocal Range - Tenor
Age 19 years old (actors submitting MUST look this young)

In 1983, Young Sam is just starting his University career – he dreams of becoming a famous defence lawyer – helping the underdogs of the world. He is constantly discouraged by unsupportive parents who tell him that he isn’t smart enough for this career path. He is instantly attracted to Young Paula. He’s rather conservative and favours old-fashioned expressions…a bit of an odd fish.

Strong signer and strong comedic skills – lots of heart.

NOTE

The two men must be believable as younger/older selves. The actor playing Young Paula must be believable as the younger counterpart to Paula (Paula has been cast).

SHORT SYNOPSIS

Set in 1956, Hilda and Sam Fluck are finally on their own after their grown children Gary and Janey leave the nest. They’re looking forward to rekindling their romance in their “Golden Years” but their love nest suddenly becomes a bit crowded with the unexpected return of the children and some very exotic visitors.

CHARACTERS TO BE CAST

1. Bobby (Female)

Age range 25-30 years old

Bobby is a trombone player in an all-girl Jazz Band. She is hip – speaks with lots of references to Jazz lingo, maybe slightly tough. A difficult childhood has made her wary.  However, she loves the Fluck family.  She is having a great time dating Gary Fluck (33 years old) but is a commitment-phobe.

2. Gary Fluck

Age 33 years old

Gary is Hilda and Sam Fluck’s son.  While he seems to be directionless in life, he is actually ahead of his time in terms of innovative ideas.  He could be seen as a “problem child” by just about everyone but he has a huge heart and in head over heels in love with his new girlfriend Bobby. Impulsive and not big in the thinking things through department.
