On April 30, at our annual Laughter in the Vineyard Fundraiser, you'll have the chance to own an original art piece by Foster Festival Board Member, Bill Ralph.
(The 2 pieces of art donated by BIll are based on photographs of The Foster Festival's 2016 Productions of On A First Name Basis and Halfway There by David Vivian, Associate Professor at the Marilyn I Walker School of Fine and Peforming Arts, Brock University, St. Catharines.)
The New York Times calls Bill Ralph's work "Visions of a Mathematical Mind".
Bill creates spectacular prints by formulating algorithms on a computer, which in turn general line, colour and shape. He starts with a photograph and then alters altered it using mathematics and computer algorithms.
The New York Times Review points out that "despite the use of advanced mathematics and technology, Bill's images are stunningly organic and naturalistic." Read the full New York Times Review »

We are honoured to have Bill Ralph – mathematician, artist, musician – as a Foster Festival Board Member.
Bill Ralph grew up in North Bay and has always been interested in mathematics, music and art. As a young adult he studied piano and composition before switching to mathematics.
He received his PhD in Algebraic Topology from the University of Waterloo. While studying the behaviour of certain chaotic dynamical systems, Ralph became interested in exploiting their complexity to create visual art.
He has subsequently been exhibited in several solo shows in Canada and the U.S., and more recently began producing digital art media for multiscreen display.
He is currently on the mathematics faculty of Brock University where his research focuses on the mathematics of finance.
